چکیده

We report the surface-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (SI-ROMP) of 5-(perfluoro-n-alkyl)norbornenes (NBFn) to grow partially fluorinated polymer films of tunable thicknesses ranging from tens of nanometers tomicrometers on gold substrates. The perfluoroalkyl chains range in length (n) from 4 to 10 carbons, representing 67-83%of the molecular weight of the repeat unit. The growth rate of the film depends on the perfluoroalkyl chain length, with longer chains enabling faster surface-initiated growth and greater ultimate thicknesses. These films exhibit hydrophobic and oleophobic surface properties and provide effective barriers to the diffusion of aqueous ions. The critical surface tensions of the films exhibit a minimum for a fluorocarbon chain of 8 (pNBF8) and range from 9 to 19 mN/m. The morphologies of the pNBFn films consist of densely packed 20-30 nm clusters that differ in the concentration of fluorocarbon chains in the outer few nanometers of the film.

Amplification of surface-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization of 5-(perfluoro-n-alkyl)norbornenes by macroinitiation.

This article reports the enhanced rate of the surface-initiated polymerization (SIP) of 5-(perfluoro-n-alkyl)norbornenes (NBFn) by combining two SIP techniques, namely surface-initiated atom-transfer polymerization (SI-ATRP) to grow a macroinitiator and surface-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (SI-ROMP) to produce the final coating. This polymerization approach promotes the rapi...

Nitroxide-Mediated Radical Polymerization of Styrene Initiated from the Surface of Titanium Oxide Nanoparticles

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles, with an average size of about 45 nm, were encapsulated by polystyrene using in situ nitroxide mediated radical polymerization   in the presence of 3-aminopropyl triethoxy silane (APTES) as a coupling agent and 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxy  as a initiator. First, the initiator for NMRP was covalently bonded onto the surface of Titanium dioxide na...

Growth and structure of surface-initiated poly(n-alkylnorbornene) films.

We report the surface-initiated growth of poly(alkylnorbornene) films via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The films are grown by exposure of a vinyl-terminated self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on gold to Grubbs first-generation catalyst and the subsequent exposure to an alkylnorbornene monomer. We investigate the influence of alkyl side chains on the structure, barrier, surface pro...

Surface-initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization and Solution Intercalation Methods for Preparation of Cellulose-G-PS-G-PAN/MMT Bionanocomposite

Cellulose was modified by polystyrene (PS) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) via free radical and living radical polymerization, and then cellulose was used as the matrix in the preparation of polymer/clay nanocomposite, through a solution intercalation method. For this purpose, first, the graft polymerization of styrene (St) onto cellulose fibers was performed by using suspension polymerization and ...
